President's Message: Second Day of Mediation

August 5th marked our second official day of mediation. While we wish we could provide a detailed breakdown of everything discussed, we're unable to share many specifics as the joint session ended early. What we are able to share will be posted on our blog as we are able. What we can say is that our team has heard your priorities loud and clear: across-the-board wage increases, meaningful improvements to benefits like vacation and retirement, and long-overdue changes to Appendix A that directly impact our salaried members.

We made it clear to OHSU that we need a detailed and transparent response regarding the proposals they outright rejected or defaulted to current contract language. This isn’t a radical ask — it’s a necessary step to ensure we fully understand their position and can thoughtfully determine where and how we move next.

Unfortunately, OHSU viewed our request for clarity as us asking them to “bargain against themselves.” Tensions rose, and the session ended early following a caucus call.

Let us be very clear: we are not just employees — we are OHSU. We are not outsiders or distant stakeholders. We are the engine that keeps this institution running every single day. An investment in our members is not merely an expense on a graph or pie chart — it’s a commitment to the very people who bring dedication and excellence to OHSU’s missions.

Better across-the-board increases, stronger benefits, and real worker protections aren’t dollars out the door — they are confirmations that OHSU values its workforce. They’re investments toward making OHSU a true employer of choice.

We remain hopeful that OHSU will recognize the value of these investments and return to the table on August 19th with meaningful responses and a renewed commitment to partnership.

In solidarity,

Jennie Olson - President Local 328
