What's Up with Preceptor Pay?

One of the hard-fought victories from our 2019 bargaining campaign was the introduction of a preceptor differential of $1.00/hour for employees who (a) work in one of the following positions and (b) have completed a preceptor education program:

  • Physical Therapist

  • Physical Therapy Assistant

  • Occupational Therapist

  • Speech and Language Pathologist Tech

  • Surgical Services Tech

  • Rad Tech (inpatient)

  • Echo Tech

  • Respiratory Care Practitioner, Coordinator and Discharge Planner

  • CT Tech

  • Mammographer

  • MRI Tech

  • Nuclear Medicine Tech

  • Ultrasound Tech

  • Vascular Tech

Preceptor pay was supposed to begin six months after ratification; i.e., March 9. For a variety of reasons, the preceptor education program has not yet been developed. OHSU estimates that it may be ready in early 2021. In order to ensure that eligible employees receive the preceptor differential, AFSCME and OHSU have reached the following understanding:

Employees in the above classifications who are precepting a student in an approved OHSU program will receive the preceptor differential effective March 9. The employee’s department must be aware of the precepting duties. In order to continue receiving the differential, the employee would need to complete the preceptor education program once it’s available.

As this ensures that eligible employees will begin receiving the preceptor differential on the contractually required date, we hope this interim solution will be satisfactory for the affected employees.
