Statement Opposing Outsourcing of AFSCME Represented Work at OHSU

It was recently reported to our union that the Environmental Services and Food & Nutrition Departments at OHSU were considering outsourcing their services. OHSU has confirmed that both departments are not considering this move, and Article 6.13 of our contract ensures we can negotiate the impact, and even bid on the services. However, as representatives of the hardworking employees at OHSU, AFSCME Local 328 stands firmly against any outsourcing of our essential represented jobs. Outsourcing not only jeopardizes the livelihoods of our members but also undermines the quality of services provided to the community.

The Environmental Services department is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and sustainability of OHSU facilities. Their dedication ensures a hygienic environment crucial for patient care and staff well-being. Likewise, the Food & Nutrition Services department plays a pivotal role in providing nutritious meals to patients, employees, and visitors, contributing to the overall health and recovery of individuals under OHSU's care.

Our members in these departments have undergone extensive training and possess valuable expertise in their respective fields, acquired through years of dedicated service to OHSU and the community we serve. To replace us with external contractors would compromise the continuity, quality, and accountability of the vital services we perform.

Moreover, any outsourcing would be a blatant disregard for the rights and dignity of OHSU's employees. Union representation ensures fair wages, benefits, and working conditions for our members. Outsourcing undermines our collective bargaining power and serves to weaken the protections we have fought hard to secure.

We would like to remind OHSU that investing in its workforce and fostering a collaborative environment will uphold its commitment to excellence in healthcare while honoring the contributions of its dedicated employees.

AFSCME stands in solidarity with the employees across all departments at OHSU. We will continue to advocate fiercely for our rights, and we call upon OHSU to continue to uphold its responsibility as an employer to protect and support its workforce.
